Strategy draws map to deal with growing elderly number

A JOINT strategy to help deal with East Lothian’s growing elderly population has been agreed by the council and NHS Lothian.

The initiative, launched on Monday, has already introduced a 24-hour emergency care service and a reablement service while a rapid response and community rehabilitation service is being developed.

Under the plans, day centres could play a much larger role to offer support to more people. A key component of the strategy is to improve information and resources for carers, offering increased options and support.

The overarching aim is to provide care of the highest possible standard by making sure there is equal access to care and support for all and engaging with local communities to ensure people remain involved.

Council leader, Paul McLennan, said: “The number of older people who live in East Lothian is growing rapidly.

“We have also seen a rise in the number of dementia sufferers so we need to make sure that our services respond to their changing needs.

“This strategy provides us with the platform to change the way we deliver services.”
