Statue call for war heroine

A CAMPAIGNER is calling for a statue to be erected in the Capital in honour of an unsung war heroine who died in the Holocaust.

Elaine Pomeransky, of Restalrig, has set up a trust fund to commemorate Jane Haining, a Scottish missionary who was killed in Auschwitz in 1944.

Ms Haining took charge of a girls' home in Budapest, Hungary, during the Second World War.

She is thought to have been gassed in August 1944, the only Scot to die in the Nazi concentration camps.

Mrs Pomeransky said: "Jane Haining was an amazing woman."
