The former footballer – classed as one of the greatest players in history – choked back tears as he told the crowd: “I will always be an Aberdonian.”

After the unveiling, the 72-year-old said: “It was a bit embarrassing really. I just sort of broke down a wee bit. I didn’t know what to say and got stuck for words. I can’t believe there is a statue of me here. It’s a lovely honour to be given a statue in my own lovely city.”

Law, who now lives in Manchester, started his illustrious career as a teenager at Huddersfield Town in 1956.

He was signed up by Manchester City four years later, setting a British record with his £55,000 transfer fee.

He later returned from Italy to play for Manchester United in 1962.
