PLANS to ban taxis and all private vehicles from Waverley Station have been postponed for the forseeable future, Network Rail announced today.

But it said the move was not being scrapped completely. The taxi rank and access road was set to be closed off in July 2012 to tie in with the London Olympics, but Network Rail, the station’s owner, has agreed to delay the move.

The company made the decision to allow station users and other stakeholders to discuss the removal of the rank, and so that the council can further explore options for creating on-street taxi facilities in the vicinity of the station.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We remain committed to implementing the proposed changes in the long term. However, we have listened to feedback from station users and have agreed to delay any action to remove vehicles to give us more time to address passenger concerns and to ensure alternative arrangements for taxis can be put in place.”
