St Andrews gas meter fires lead to evacuation

TWENTY homes were evacuated after a fire damaged two gas meters in the coastal town of St Andrews.

Firefighters were called to Churchill Crescent in the Fife town just before 9pm last night where a fence was alight.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said two gas meters were affected by the blaze, and 20 properties had to be evacuated as there was a smell of gas in the area.

Engineers attended and the majority of the residents were allowed back into their homes just before midnight.
