SSPCA launches blanket appeal for injured animals

AN animal charity is appealing for blankets for sick and injured wild animals.

The SSPCA has launched the appeal as the cold weather affects Scotland’s wildlife.

Animals such as otters and beavers which become separated from their families require the additional warmth of the blankets to mimic the heat from their mothers in the nest.

Colin Seddon of the National Wildlife Rescue Centre at Fishcross said: “We use the blankets when moving and handling the animals to minimise stress and help them feel safe and secure.

“We also use blankets for bedding purposes as many of the mammals we have in our care are very young and require the warmth and comfort they would normally receive from their mother’s body when curled up in the nest.”

The recent poor weather has seen a spate of animals seemingly washed away from their parents, with otters particularly affected.

Blankets and supplies can be handed in at the Centre, near Alloa.
