Speeding police drivers escape fines

SCORES of tickets handed out to speeding police officers have been cancelled, new figures show.

Lothian and Borders Police said a total of 177 tickets picked up by officers on duty had been rescinded since 2005.

The force said no further action was taken against the officers because the speeding had occurred during the course of police duties.

A force spokesman said: "In most cases for police officers, no further action is taken once it is clear that the offence was incurred during police duties.

"In the event that the Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) is not exempt in this way, the NIP is returned and the driver of the vehicle identified.

"A conditional offer will be issued to the driver. This allows the driver to pay a penalty and to get points added to their licence."

A total of ten speeding offences were upheld against police officers since 2005.
