Spanish defence minister out of race

Spain's defence minister has withdrawn from the race to take over the beleaguered Socialist Party's leadership ahead of general elections in 2012.

Carme Chacon, 40, made the surprise announcement, saying she was pulling out to avoid dividing the party. The way now looks clear for Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba to succeed Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
