Snake found in Nationwide bank branch in Dalkeith

The Scottish SPCA is seeking the owner of a snake who was found in a bank in Midlothian.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Monday, when shocked workers discovered the creature at Nationwide’s Dalkeith branch.

The two and a half foot long cornsnake, who has been named Banksy, is now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Balerno.

Animal Rescue Officer Melissa Maitland said: “Banksy was found in a storage area behind a filing cabinet by two staff members. They were initially very worried as they didn’t know what kind of snake he was.

“Snakes are good escape artists so we think he may have strayed from an area close by. We are regularly called out to rescue snakes, particularly corn snakes, as they are a very popular pet that seem to be excellent at breaking out of their vivarium.

“Banksy is really friendly and has been well handled so we think there is someone out there missing him.

“We’d love to reunite Banksy with his owner but if no-one comes forward we’ll find him a new home.”

Anyone who recognises Banksy is being asked to contact the Scottish SPCA’s Balerno centre on 03000 999 999.
