Smokers told to think of their pockets

SMOKERS should be reminded how the habit is hitting their pocket, as well as their health, a charity in the Capital has said.

ASH Scotland, which lobbies against tobacco, said the average 20-a-day smoker blew more than 2000 annually on their habit.

And the group's chief executive, Sheila Duffy, said that this message should sit alongside the numerous health warnings associated with smoking tobacco issued by the Scottish Government.

She said: "Smoking is a drain on our finances, both personal and national, and comes at a cost to all of us.

"At a time when we are all feeling the pinch, 2300 is a lot of money that could be spent on other items or saved for the future.

"Saving that money is a great motivator to quitting, as of course are the benefits to the health of the smoker and those around them.

"Smoking causes more than 13,300 adult deaths every year and thousands of others are affected by smoking-related illnesses."

She added: "By quitting, smokers can help Scotland's economy."
