Smoke alert as scrapyard hit by blaze

A SCRAPYARD has been hit by a huge blaze for the second time this year.

Residents were ordered to remain indoors with their windows shut as thick smoke billowed from Campbells Auto Salvage Yard in Armadale, West Lothian, last night.

At its height, approximately 50 firefighters were tackling the blaze, which began at around 8pm. A mobile water tanker, known as a water bowser, was also used.

It is believed that around 60 scrap vehicles caught fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established with an investigation expected to begin today. There were no casualties.

In January, thugs were blamed after 150 cars were destroyed at Campbells Auto Salvage Yard, reportedly causing £30,000 worth of damage.

A spokesperson for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “Any fire involving scrap vehicles has the potential to give off a toxic plume.”
