Skimming device found at Dundee ATM

THE Tayside Division of Police Scotland today warned the public to be on their guard after a skimming device was discovered at a cash machine at a Dundee supermarket.

The illegal device, fitted to an ATM at Morrison’s supermarket in the city’s Afton Way, was spotted by a member of the public shortly after 9am on Monday morning.

A Tayside Division spokesman said: “Officers attended and removed the fake fascia and enquiries are underway to establish how long it had been there and whether it was possible for any illegal transactions to have been made on personal accounts.

“As well as carrying out a review of CCTV coverage, officers are also appealing for anyone who used the cashpoint recently and who suspects their bank account may have been compromised to contact Police Scotland on 101.

“They should also report it to their card issuer immediately so they can take appropriate steps.”

The spokesman added: “Everyone who uses a cash machine needs to be alert to this particular type of scam and should report anything suspicious to the police, as well as the bank or store where the ATM is situated. Skimming devices are designed to read cash and credit card details without the knowledge of the cardholder. Such equipment is designed to appear genuine to the untrained or unsuspecting eye.”
