Skiers hit the slopes after snowfall

SKIERS hitting the slopes at Scotland’s top snowsports centre are being advised to make the most of the wintery conditions this weekend in case weather changes next week.

An influx of skiers travelled to Cairngorm Mountain yesterday boosting an otherwise poor season. Ironically, the resort had only recently switched to “summer” activities a month earlier than usual because of a poor winter season.

But recent snow has meant it “switched back to winter mode” and lured hundreds to the slopes yesterday. It is expecting up to 1,500 more over the next two days. The resort near Aviemore will also be running freestyle, dual slalom and ski touring competitions over the weekend.

Colin Kirkwood, its marketing manager, said: “We now have some of the best conditions of the season on the higher parts of the mountains.

People should make the most of the conditions this weekend. We’ll have to review the situation on Monday before we can say what things will be like.”

Among Scotland’s other four snowsports resorts, only Glencoe was also open yesterday, but had not made a decision about opening this weekend.
