Singer Sydney Devine’s secret gig for fan

SINGER Sydney Devine played a secret gig at the deathbed of one of his biggest fans.

Christine Stephen from Edinburgh, who was battling bowel cancer, was astonished to find her musical hero was her surprise 70th birthday present.

And kind-hearted Sydney, 72, who had responded to a letter from Christine’s policeman son David Thomson, delighted her with a medley of her favourite songs, including his signature tune Tiny Bubbles.

David, from Tranent, said he just expected a signed photo when he contacted the singer – not for Sydney and his wife Shirley to deliver it in person to Christine’s home.

But three days before Christine’s birthday, he received a call to say they were coming to visit.

Sadly, Christine died on September 5, three weeks after Sydney’s visit.
