Shovels and wellies go fast as freeze continues

SALES of wellies and shovels are soaring in the Capital, but supermarkets continue to face salt shortages.

DIY giant B&Q said there had been a huge rise in sales of shovels, wellies and rock salt in the last three weeks, compared with last year.

Sales of rock salt were up 150 per cent, shovels 200 per cent and wellies 120 per cent.

A spokesman at the Powderhall store added: "We have totally sold out of rock salt and snow shovels, and there aren't many wellies left."

However, the wintry conditions have meant a boom for some, with several major retailers reportedly selling out of sledges.

Meanwhile, supermarkets in the Capital were today still reporting salt shortages, with several completely sold out.

Asda, at The Jewel, reported only a small quantity of rock salt left with no guaranteed date of delivery for more.

Tesco's branches at Nicolson Street, Leith Walk and Great Junction Street were also unable to give a certain time when stocks would be replenished.

However, Morrisons at Piershill and Ferry Road were expecting deliveries.

One worker said: "As soon as the salt comes in, it's selling out fast."

Sainsbury's stores at Murrayfield and Cameron Toll had no salt in stock and reported sales of cat litter being bought as an alternative.
