Shop worker helps tenant escape blaze

A SHOP worker has described how he helped save a woman from a fire in her tenement flat.

Mark Singh, 22, had been serving a customer in his Best Fae Scotland gift shop in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in Edinburgh on Saturday morning when a tourist ran in shouting “there’s smoke coming from the flat above you.”

Mr Singh said he dialled 999 and rushed upstairs with an assistant from a nearby cafe.

“The woman was saying she couldn’t find her key to get out. We tried to kick her door but it was really difficult. We kept trying and then one of the neighbours, who had been telling people to get out, came down and helped. He put in the door and flung her out. She was in her night suit, her hair was singed and her face was blackened by smoke.”
