Shop wins fight to hang lit-up sign

A LOTHIANS shop has won its battle with the council to hang an illuminated sign.

The Gothenburgh convenience store in Whitburn had been denied permission for the lit-up advert at its branch in Main Street by West Lothian Council. But bosses there appealed to the Scottish Government, which has now allowed the move.

Holyrood planning reporter D T Alexander said: “It appears to me reasonable for the applicant to have some level of illumination to the main fascia sign to draw attention to the premises.

“I consider the proposed type of illumination would be visually acceptable with no significant loss of amenity to the street scene or to the occupiers of the properties some 30 metres away on the opposite side of Main Street.”

As well as the sign, which involves “halo” lighting on the letters, six other small promotion boards have been installed.
