Sharleen Spiteri to star in new 'Local Hero'

Chart star Sharleen Spiteri is to move into the film world after landing her first lead role.

The former Texas singer will star in Between Weathers, which is to be shot in the Shetland Islands.

The film shows a remote community in its battle to protect its island from a corporate giant that wants to exploit the area.

Hit film Local Hero, made by Bill Forsyth in 1983, had a similar theme, with a US oil company trying to buy up a Scottish village.

Also starring in the new film will be Dawn Steele, who is known to TV viewers for her role in hit BBC drama Monarch of the Glen.

Film-makers have yet to cast the lead male roles for the movie, which will be made next summer.

Producer Jim Brown said yesterday: "We are delighted to have Sharleen and Dawn on board as the first raft of leading talent signed up."
