Severe weather warning as blizzards hit Capital

Commuters and city residents have been warned to expect traffic disruption and widespread icy conditions both later tonight and tomorrow morning as some of the worst weather of the winter is expected to hit.

Transport Minister Keith Brown has urged commuters to pay attention to travel updates throughout Tuesday.

He said: “The next 24-48 hours look set to be challenging for our transport networks, commuters and the public. We are already doing all we can to ensure Scotland is prepared for disruption. Drivers can play their part by planning journeys in advance and using other forms of transport where available.”

City council chiefs have stressed that even though they are fully prepared for the worst, disruption may still occur.

The local authority’s 21 gritters will be out throughout the night treating all primary 1 and 2 roads.

Environment Convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “Our gritting teams will work round the clock to help keep the city moving whatever the weather brings over the next few days. Residents can keep up to date with any developments through the our website, Twitter and Facebook page. We would also encourage everyone to take extra care on the roads.”
