Second baby dies after being left in parents' car

An 11-month-old Italian baby has died after being forgotten in his parents' car - the second such death in less than a week.

Jacopo Riganelli had been left in the car for an extended period by his father Sergio, 41, who raised the alarm when he returned and saw his son lifeless.

Paramedics were unable to save Jacopo and police were last night investigating the death, just days after a two-year-old girl died in similar circumstances.

The latest incident happened in the car park of a yacht club on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, near Perugia.

Unseasonably warm weather has seen temperatures hit 30C in the area and officials said it would have been almost double that inside the car.

Police chief Carlo Corbinelli said: "At this stage it looks like a tragic accident. We are still trying to establish how long the child was left in the car for."

He added that Sergio Riganelli is in hospital with his wife, under sedation, and police have yet to interview him.

Last Sunday, Elena Petrizzi died in hospital three days after she had been left in a car under the hot sun for five hours. Her father is being investigated for suspected manslaughter.
