At one point it was customary for the highly organised to burrow themselves in travel books before embarking on a holiday on the road.Now thanks to the wonders of the smartphone, even those who have conducted only the minimum of pre-trip reconnaissance can just about get away with it. Here we look at the apps that should be on any visitor to Scotland’s smart phone.

This free app allows you to plan your journey in advance and also see live journey times (excluding trains).

Trip Advisor - iPhone/ Android - Free

A hotel owner’s nightmare and a travellers dream, Trip Advisor has shaken up the travel world.

With this app, which builds on the phenomenally successful website, you can find places nearby and more importantly if they’re deserving of your hard-earned cashed.

Be warned though, some Trip Advisor contributors can be a tad overtly critical. They’re pretty easy to spot!

Traffic Cams Scotland - iPhone/ Android - £0.69

If you’re holiday plans involve travelling in Scotland city’s or on its motorways then this is an app which could make your holiday a much calmer one.

For the princely sum of 69p, traffic headaches can be avoided by switching to an alternative route.

This well-designed app is aimed at the overseas visitor to Scotland and includes maps, information on outdoor activities, restaurants and events.

Much of the content is download direct to your device so is usable even in areas of minimal coverage.
