Brechin goalie Graeme Smith turns up at wrong ground

WHEN your team has a game in Brechin, it’s best not to turn up 80 miles away at a different stadium.

Especially when you’re the home goalkeeper.

But that’s exactly what Brechin City goalie Graeme Smith managed to do ahead of his side’s clash with Stenhousemuir, as the ex-Hibernian and Motherwell shot-stopper arrived in plenty of time for a 3pm kick-off at Ochilview, only to realise it was a home match at Brechin’s Glebe Park.

The 32-year-old did manage to make it in time for the start of the League One clash, but was on the losing side as Stenny recorded a 2-1 victory.

Smith’s gaffe was picked up by Stenhousemuir’s community football chief William Hoggan, who tweeted: “Brechin City keeper Graeme Smith rocks up to Ochilview Park today but they’re the home team. Haha classic.”

And in a further cruel twist for Smith, a former team-mate revealed that he once made the same mistake while a youth player with Rangers.

Ross Brownlee tweeted that Smith had once ‘done it at a youth Old Firm game with [John] Bomber Brown in attendance’.

Thankfully, Brechin saw the funny side and tweeted a reminder for the ‘keeper that the team has an away fixture against Airdrie next week.
