Bill Clinton ‘dreamed of becoming Scottish MP’

Bill Clinton dreamed of forging a political career and playing golf in Scotland when he was US President, newly released documents have revealed.

Transcripts of telephone conversations between Mr Clinton and Tony Blair when both men were in office reveal the depth of his feeling for Scotland.

The records of the conversations, which took place between 1997 and 2000, have been released following a BBC freedom of information request to the Clinton Presidential Library, which stores information relating to his presidency.

In one conversation, Mr Clinton asks the then Prime Minister if people are “happy” in Scotland following Mr Blair’s election to Downing Street.

Mr Blair replies: “Yes, a lot happier in Scotland and you will be getting any amount of cashmere that you want.”

Mr Clinton then says: “What I want, is that when I am done here to be made an honorary UK citizen and give me a seat from Scotland next door to a good golf course.”

His dream, however, is interrupted by the pressures of being the most powerful man in the West. In his next breath, the then President remarks: “The daily papers today are filled with China being pissed off and Russia threatening war.”
