Scottish Government to create 500 new rural jobs

THE Scottish Government has confirmed that over 500 new jobs will be created thanks to a £60 million scheme.

Rural Affairs and Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said the funding will help a poultry farm near Peebles and an eco-friendly resort in Ballantrae.

The funding comes through the Rural Priorities scheme and will create 530 jobs and sustain a further 430, according to the Government.

Mr Lochhead said: "These are difficult economic times and the creation of 530 jobs across the country will be a welcome boost to our rural areas."

In total around 4,500 projects have received 330 million from Rural Priorities, he said.

"It is hugely encouraging to see so many applications coming forward that will boost the rural economy through job creation and others that will deliver major environmental benefits."

"Rural Priorities alone has now approved around 330 million which will also develop our rural communities, protect Scotland's natural environment and combat climate change."

The scheme provides grants for environmental and business support.
