Scots women sheer sheep to raise money for charity

A GROUP of Scottish women have raised money for charity by shearing sheep.

A team of ten, all from the Newton Stewart area of Kirkcudbrightshire, worked non-stop from 9am until 5pm, shearing hundreds of them.

The group, who are not professionals, were raising money for Newton Stewart Community Hospital and the Royal Highland Education Trust at the Craig Wilson Auction Mart in the town.

More than 800 sheep were provided for shearing, with a further 400 on stand-by.

Lorna Galloway, 28, who helped organise the event, said: “Shearing for a full day is the same as taking part in two marathons back-to-back. These sheep are big and it takes a minute or two to shear each one, so it is very gruelling.

“The girls are all from farms but are by no means professionals.”

She added: “The support has been phenomenal. Lots of people turned out to cheer them on ”

Libby Templeton, 25, was one of those who took part in the shearing.

She said: “It was hard work but it went really well and we had a lot of support from local people. It’s quite unusual idea because it’s normally the males who do the shearing.”
