The twitter spat started last night with Ms McGarry, who represents Glasgow East, accusing Ms Rowling of “defending misogynist trolls” and said she “regretted” queuing to buy her books. When asked for evidence by Ms Rowling, the SNP MP said the author had tweeted support of a user called Brian Spanner.
Ms Rowling replied: “You aren’t some random hater, Natalie. You’re an elected politician and you’ve accused me of supporting abuse and misogyny.”
She added: “So you need to provide some evidence for that or I’m going to need an apology.”
Ms McGarry accused Ms Rowling of “bullying her” before stating that she was stepping on to a plane and users could “scream your uninformed Twitter outrage into the empty void”.
However, the MP later apologised and tweeted to the multi-millionaire Harry Potter author: “On reflection, I do apologise for any misguided inference that you support misogyny or abuse instead of the folk you tweet.”
