Scots distillery bids to create world’s largest bottle of whisky

A SCOTTISH distillery’s bid to smash the record for creating world’s largest bottle of whisky will take a major step forward next week when the specially created 200 litre glass bottle arrives in Scotland.

The world record for the biggest bottle of whisky is currently held by American company Jack Daniels.

But Perth-based the Famous Grouse are planning to enter the Guinness Book of World Records with the largest bottle ever produced when the massive flask of glass is filled on 12 August - the brand’s birthday.

A company spokeswoman explained: “The bottle is currently at Svetla, a town near Prague, where the company behind its creation, Czech glass manufacturers BOMMA, is based. The Famous Grouse partnered with the Czech company as they were the only glass manufacturers able to fulfil the whisky brand’s enormous request.

“The bottle stands at an impressive five feet and five inches tall and will hold the equivalent of 8,000 drams of whisky. Weighing a quarter of a tonne the huge bottle will be an exact replica of The Famous Grouse iconic bottle.”

Jiri Trtik,a director of BOMMA, said: “When The Famous Grouse approached us with this request we were excited by the opportunity, especially as it is part of a Guinness World Record attempt. Glass blowing a bottle of this size requires a lot of skill and many years of training, but with over 20 years of experience in the team we were certainly up for the challenge.

“It’s always nerve-racking attempting something on this scale but we’re nearly there now and it’s quite a spectacle. We’ve become so immersed in this project that we will be driving the bottle over to Scotland personally next week and will be there on 12th August to see it break the world record.”

Glen Gribbon, director of The Famous Grouse, said:“This is an exciting time in our world record breaking attempt. There is no back up and if the bottle is damaged at all in transit then it could put the whole record attempt in jeopardy. We’ve even banned the phrase ‘smashing the record’ at our distillery as we don’t want to tempt fate.”

The Famous Grouse is aiming to take the current record from Jack Daniel’s who entered into the Guinness Book of World Records last year by producing a 184 litre bottle.
