Scotland’s weather: Schools closed as snow continues

ABANDONED cars could only just be seen under deep snow in Aberdeenshire yesterday, as ice and snow conditions continued to create hazardous road conditions for drivers.

Dozens of schools across Scotland also remained closed as the week’s wintry weather continued in many areas.

In Grampian, a number of roads were shut, while others were hazardous or “passable with care”.

Police also issued travel warnings in Tayside and snow left drivers struggling in parts of the Borders where the council said some priority routes remained single-track due to drifting snow. More than 70 schools were closed yesterday, the majority of which were in Aberdeenshire, but schools in Aberdeen, Angus, Perth and Kinross, Fife and the Borders were also affected.

A woman was cut free from her car and taken to hospital after an accident on the A90 near Stonehaven, in Aberdeenshire, after crashing in hazardous conditions. Her injuries were not thought to be life threatening. And forecasters last night predicted the weather will continue to cause problems with further snow to come this week before a rapid thaw, which would bring with it a risk of flooding.

More snow is forecast to fall tomorrow night, with southern Scotland and northern England, including the Pennines, expected to receive a further 10cm (3.8in), before a significant rise in temperatures over the weekend.

Meteogroup forecaster Paul Mott said: “That will bring with it the increased risk of flooding, with the snow rapidly thawing from Sunday and further rain forecast for the north and west of the UK.”
