Fort William and Glasgow will be the hottest places in Scotland, and although it will be cooler in the east, clear skies and light winds are expected, it said.

However, forecasters said that from Monday temperatures are likely to drop with some showers predicted.

Lindsay Mears, spokeswoman for Met Office, said: “Monday and Tuesday looks a little more unsettled with perhaps some showers, so people should enjoy the weekend while they can.”

The outlook is in contrast to London and the south-east which is bracing itself for a heatwave, with the mercury set to rise to more than 32C.

Officials sent out health warnings last night during the hottest spell of weather for seven years.

After five consecutive days of 30C-plus temperatures, the Met Office issued a “level-three heat health watch” for London and the south-east and advised “alertness and readiness” for those in the north-west and north-east of England.

Public health officials advised people to stay cool, drink lots of cold fluids and keep an eye on those they know to be at risk.

Heatwave plan leader Dr Angie Bone said: “In this continued hot weather, it’s important to remember that high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses.”

VisitScotland has said that the recent good weather is thought to have encouraged holidaymakers to take trips around Scotland instead of heading abroad.

Chairman Mike Cantlay said: “The recent fantastic weather has offered a tremendous tonic for Scotland’s tourism industry after two less than ideal summers.

“With the glorious scenes at Castle Stuart for the Scottish Open and this week’s Open Championship at Muirfield being thrust into the homes of millions around the globe, the weather is acting as the perfect background to promote our wonderful country.”
