Part two will be published in The Scotsman tomorrow.

The four 8-page supplements are being produced in partnership with the University of Edinburgh’s ground-breaking research project ‘Scotland’s War 1914-1919’ which over the next four years will build online the most detailed portrait yet of our nation at war.

How did the assassination of an Austrian archduke result in the beginning of a world war that would kill or injure thousand of Scots men?

The women’s active service deaths are still to be being quantified.

The men of Scotland rose to a national appeal to join the war effort. The supplements will follow them through the mud of the western front, the dust of Gallipoli and the chilled waters of the North Sea and the Battle of Jutland.

‘Scotland’s War’ will also examine the political and labour tensions on the home front and the contribution of the nation’s women at both home and on the front.
