Scotland's lesson from Reformation

THE educational benefits of the Reformation have been "vital" to Scotland's development, First Minister Alex Salmond said yesterday.

The 16th-century religious and social overhaul saw Scotland formally break from the Roman Catholic Church's authority and move to the Protestant faith.

Mr Salmond was making the opening speech during a conference entitled Scottish Reformation - Marking the Legacy, Imagining the Future, at the Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh yesterday. It was organised by the Church of Scotland and the Catholic Church in Scotland to mark the 450th anniversary of the Reformation.

Mr Salmond later attended an ecumenical service and read a lesson at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, with the Scottish Government also hosting a multi-faith reception at Edinburgh Castle following the service.
