Scotland comes second in top ‘staycations’ list

SCOTLAND has come second in a list of the UK’s most popular “staycation” destinations.

A new study by Barclays Business bank has revealed that the nation spends £22.5 billion every year on holidays in the UK.

Accommodation and food services have also reported a 17 per cent rise in turnover since 2009.

According to the survey, more than three quarters of UK adults have been on, or are planning, a staycation.

Adam Rowse, head of business banking at Barclays, said: “Great British landmarks hold pride of place in the nation’s heart as drivers of regional tourism, while many accommodation businesses are catering for the nation’s appetite for more unusual places to rest their head, such as a yurt or camper van.”

Some of the major attractions that could be keeping Scots at home are of course, the Fringe, the Edinburgh International Festival and Mela.

It seemed some in the city were fed-up with tourists from elsewhere visiting recently.

Website Reddit found local people answering tourists with such nuggets as: ‘The Queen does not live in Edinburgh Castle,” And “The Royal Mile is a mile long,”

And finally, “It’s pronounced Edin-bruh.”

The South West of England is the most popular spot, according to the study.
