Scholarship to honour Liddell

A SCHOLARSHIP scheme in honour of Eric Liddell – one of Scotland’s greatest Olympians – was set to be launched at Edinburgh University today.

Education Secretary Mike Russell and Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, principal of the university, were due to announce details of the scholarships this afternoon.

Liddell won gold in the 400 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games while a student of Pure Science at Edinburgh University.

His triumph has been immortalised in books, documentaries and Oscar-winning feature film Chariots of Fire.

Liddell was born in China to Scottish missionary parents in 1902.
