Scheme aims to stop crime by drug users

A PILOT scheme aimed at diverting some of Edinburgh's most persistent offenders from repetitive offending linked to their dependency on drink or drugs has been launched by Lothian and Borders Police.

Officials hope helping addicts reduce or overcome their substance misuse will also cut the number of crimes these people are committing.

The Integrated Offender Management Pilot will involve Lothian and Borders Police, the City of Edinburgh Council, Sacro and the Scottish Prison Service.

Assistant Chief Constable Mike McCormick said: "This initiative will provide support to repeat offenders to help them on their journey to recovery.

"Ultimately we hope it will reduce their criminal behaviour and encourage re-integration to local communities. The benefit to the community will be in the long term savings in health and criminal justice costs."

The scheme is aimed at vulnerable offenders who persistently carry out crime or prostitution to fund their drug or alcohol abuse.
