Saskia takes the rap as she states her change of mind

Saskia, who will perform at a wedding for the first time later this year, can be heard singing the song on YouTube after mum Lee-Ann Mclaren recorded her daughter’s vocals. The video is already racking up the hits since being uploaded last Saturday.

The family, who live in Balgreen, hope to get it recorded professionally, with Saskia planning to perform the song during another busking spell at The Mound in the summer.

Saskia’s dad, Tony, 47, a car salesman, said: “Saskia just loves singing – that’s all she does – so anything new or something different she’s quite happy to give a bash.”

Last year, Saskia coined in more than £100 an hour as she entertained Festival-goers at a spot on The Mound with renditions of songs by Amy Winehouse, Adele and Celine Dion.

She also reached the final 200 of Britain’s Got Talent in 2011 from an initial 100,000 hopefuls, and was tipped for big things by judge David Hasselhoff.

The lyrics for the local take on the Empire State of Mind smash hit were written by Saskia’s mum, making reference to tartan, tourists and trams, as well as Holyrood, the Royal Mile and Princes Street.

Ms Mclaren, a mother-of-four, said: “I wrote Saskia’s first original song so I decided to do her a couple of parodies. I remember there was the Glasgow State of Mind song which was more of a jokey one and quite crude. I just thought it would be nice to do an Edinburgh one. Saskia was happy with the lyrics.

“She’s going to sing it when she’s doing her busking in the summer at The Mound.”

Saskia added: “My mum took a lot of time writing the song.”

The Balgreen Primary pupil is said to be so keen on singing that she even belts out ballads in her sleep.

She will perform at a variety show to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support at Howden Park Theatre in Livingston in March. She will also perform for free at her first wedding at The Saltire in Livingston in May. Any donations will be given to her school.

In 2010, an internet spoof version of Empire State of Mind that relocated the song to the south Wales city of Newport was pulled from YouTube after EMI Music Publishing, which represents four of the seven writers of the song, moved to have the song taken down. However, Miss Mclaren, 37, said she doesn’t believe Saskia’s recording will be pulled because she has expressed that she does not own the rights to the song.
