But the police officers’ task has been made all the more difficult as it transpired the man robbed the bank while the infamous ‘Santacon’ was behind held in San Francisco at the same time.

During the event, thousands of people dress up as Father Christmas, with organisers describing the festival as ‘a charitable, non-commercial, non-political nonsensical Santa Claus convention that happens once a year for absolutely no reason’.

That’s that, then.

During the Santa-related shenanigans, the bank robber entered a bank in the city’s Union Square at around 1pm, according to local media.

He gave a bank employee a note indicating that he had a handgun and wanted money.

She handed over an unspecified amount of cash and Santa fled the scene - presumably to mingle with his fellow Kris Kringles.

Police Sergeant Monica MacDonald said: “Any other day, Santa would have stood out but that day Santa was everywhere.”

Officers have said they are looking for a man aged between 40 and 50, and about 6ft tall.

No mention of a white beard or red suit, however.
