Sales slump continues

Sales at the Edinburgh branch of department store John Lewis are running lower than last year after the latest weekly slump.

In the first 23 weeks of the company’s financial year, sales at the St James Centre store are running 0.3 per cent lower than at the same time last year.

And the latest weekly figures show that sales were down 11.8 per cent in the week to January 7 compared with the same week last year. However, the figures were affected by there being one fewer trading day in the week compared with the equivalent seven day period last year.

Across the UK, John Lewis sales were down by 2.6 per cent for the week to January 7 but are up by 1.7 per cent in the financial year so far.
