Road casualties at new low

THE number of casualties on Scotland's roads has fallen to the lowest levels since records began, new figures show.

Statistics released by the Scottish Government also showed that, compared with 2009, the reported number of deaths on the country's roads fell in 2010 by four per cent to 208 and the number of serious injuries fell by 14 per cent to 1960.

In Edinburgh, provisional figures showed there had been 1179 accidents overall, with four fatalities.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "This is a welcome reduction in the number of fatalities and casualties on Scotland's roads.

"However, even one death on Scotland's roads is unacceptable and we remain committed to achieving further reductions."
