Rethink call over taxi ban

PLANS to ban taxis from Waverley station are set to be opposed by the city council’s new administration.

The station’s owner, Network Rail, wishes to force taxis out of the station as a security measure designed to bring it into line with other major UK stations.

It has been revealed that short term permits are due to be issued at the end of this month.

Calling for a rethink on the plans, City transport leader Lesley Hinds said: “There has to be a balance struck between security concerns and providing proper access to the station. The current proposals are not acceptable.”

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “There are ongoing discussions with the council but these are over additional provision of external taxi ranks. Our plan is to bring this in by the end of next year.”
