Record year for lottery millionaires

A RECORD-BREAKING number of millionaires was created by the National Lottery this year, figures have revealed.

A total of 158 people joined the millionaires' club over the past 12 months - an increase of 26 on 2009.

The lottery paid out 775 million in jackpot prizes alone this year, up 285m on 2009 and the highest amount paid out in one year.

In October, the National Lottery hit the landmark of creating more than 2,500 millionaires since its launch 16 years ago.

A National Lottery spokesman said: "This has been an extraordinary year for our players with so many new millionaires and multi-millionaires created."
