Rebus steps out of the shadows to take on one last case

HE'S kept a low profile since his well-publicised retirement as one of the world's best-loved police inspectors.

But John Rebus is to make a return in a new, one-off tale.

His creator, author Ian Rankin, is to bring Detective Inspector Rebus back into the public eye through a visit to one of the Capital's best-known watering holes, the Caledonian Brewery – home of his favourite pint, Deuchars IPA.

The unique event will see Merchiston-based Rankin give an hour-long, exclusive reading of the story to raise money for the Royal Blind School, which his teenage son attends.

Steph Ley, marketing and fundraising officer for the cause, said: "He's bringing Rebus back for this one event. We're all so excited – it's a must for any diehard fan."

Rankin has refused to reveal to organisers the details of the story but has agreed to allow guests the chance to work out its ending and speculate on its twists and turns – before he reveals it himself.

Ms Ley said: "Basically, Ian will read for most of the event and then there will be a discussion as people try to solve the mystery. He'll then reveal the ending.

"It's going to be a complete surprise – we're eager to know more."

Rankin has also agreed to give a fan a chance to appear in another of his works by writing them into the narrative if they make the highest bid during a charity auction at the event.

Murder for a Beer takes place on 4 March and will also see the author auction off a limited- edition Rebus whisky worth around 1,000.

Rankin has long supported fundraising for the Royal Blind School as his 15-year-old son Kit is a pupil.

The teenager has Angelman syndrome – a rare genetic disorder that left him blind and unable to walk or talk.

Many months ago, Rankin was approached to see if he would take part in an event and it was he who suggested bringing Rebus back for a one-off story, aware of the publicity it would bring the cause.

Rare Rebus memorabilia will also be included in the charity auction, including signed works, and fans will have an opportunity to discuss with the writer his life and inspirations, as well as bidding for a chance to join him for a pie and a pint in the city.

Ms Ley said: "He has helped us out so much and we're delighted he is doing so again."

Detective Inspector Rebus has not graced the streets of Edinburgh since 2007 when Rankin released Exit Music, following the final days of the celebrated policeman's career.

There are about 60 tickets left for the charity event which cost 40 a head, including a buffet and drinks.

It will be hosted by STV presenter Stephen Jardine.
