Rail union joy over new line

UNION leaders have welcomed assurances from Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson over plans for staffing levels on the £300 million Airdrie to Bathgate rail line.

The RMT union had feared for safety over plans to operate "driver-only" trains on the route.

The union said Mr Stevenson had made it "absolutely clear" that there was "no economic case" for scrapping guards.

General secretary Bob Crow, said: "RMT is pleased with the positive progress."
