The £7000 camera - sponsored by subsea firm BowTech - will be used by specialist divers in the Underwater Diving Unit as they work to determine whether objects discovered in the depths of the sea or rivers in the area are linked to any crimes.

A spokesman for Police Scotland explained: “The camera will be used for taking photographs and recording footage, and will also help police divers undertake safe searches, as well as establish whether there has been any criminality involved with objects that are recovered.”

Sandy Osborne, Aberdeen Division’s dive supervisor, said: “This camera is a fantastic asset to the team here in establishing whether any objects that have been lost or thrown into the sea are linked to any on-going investigations.

Safe

“The equipment is state-of-the-art and will enhance considerably the unit’s capability in obtaining underwater imagery to an even higher standard than at present.

“It will also continue to help the team establish whether there is any criminality involved and if it is safe for our divers to investigate any discoveries.”

Bowtech have been working in partnership with the Police Scotland - formally Grampian Police - Underwater search unit for over 15 years. One of Bowtech’s first DVIS - diver video inspection systems - was specifically designed around the strict requirements of the underwater search unit.

Andrew Winstanley, sales manager for BowTech said: “We have been working hard to establish the best way for BowTech to support our local dive team and to ensure they are using the very latest equipment we can offer them.”
