£1m ‘Carnaby Street’ vision for Rose Street

A TRANSFORMATION of the Capital’s Rose Street costing £1 million is being planned.

Under plans being considered by the city council the investment would see a range of pavement cafes and street entertainment brought in, similar to the famous Carnaby Street in London, it was reported today.

Both businesses and residents in recent years have complained that the atmosphere on the pedestrianised street has soured, attracting groups of rowdy young drinkers and driving out tourists.

It is understood existing businesses there will be urged to “spill out” onto the pavement, while leading architects will be brought in to spruce up the thoroughfare.

Designated busking zones will be created to improve the ambience, and major sporting events, such as the Six Nations rugby tournament, will be embraced by creating special fan areas.

Andy Neal, chief executive of Essential Edinburgh, said: “We want it to be more like Carnaby Street in London, with pavement cafes extended out into the street, live music and more of an effort made to attract people onto the street.”
