£10k of whisky stolen from distillery

WHISKY worth more than £10,000 has been stolen in a raid on the visitor centre of Glenglassaugh Distillery that police have described as “a very unusual theft”.

Police Scotland is investigating the theft following a break-in at the Glenglassaugh Distillery, near Portsoy, Aberdeenshire.

A number of bottles of unusual whisky were stolen in the incident between 4.30pm on Tuesday June 10 and 9.30am on Wednesday June 11.

Among the bottles taken were 37-year-old and 40-year-old Glenglassaugh malt whisky along with bottles of Glenglasshaugh Evolution, Tonfa and Revival whisky.

Also taken were four pot stills and a quantity of Lyle & Scott jumpers, coloured blue, grey or green with “Glenglassaugh Distillery” embroidered on them.

Constable Geraint Kalies of Banff police office said enquiries in to the incident were “ongoing”, adding: “This is a very unusual theft and I am appealing for any witnesses who may have any information regarding the identify of the persons responsible.

“I would also ask that anyone who is offered whisky or clothing branded with Glenglassaugh Distillery should contact Police.”

Glenglassaugh Distillery, which dates back to 1875, stands at the east end of Sandend bay around two miles west of Portsoy.

The distillery originally was built on the banks of the Glassaugh burn, in an area known to have been previously favoured by illicit distillers.
