Prompt action prevents catastrophe at Kelvin Hall

A BLAZE caused damage to one of Scotland's best known sports arenas yesterday.

The fire broke out at around 9am yesterday morning at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. No-one was injured but fire crews warned the damage could have been "catastrophic" but for their early intervention.

Assistant Chief Officer David Goodhew said: "Our firefighters prevented what could have been catastrophic fire damage to one of Glasgow's landmark buildings.

"Staff at Kelvin Hall asked us to do all we could to save the venue's running track and I am pleased to say we were able to do so."

A spokesman for Glasgow Life, which operates the centre, said: "The fire was quickly contained to a small area within the complex. Although damage is limited, the centre will remain closed while the affected area is being cleaned."

The spokesman said the Halls would probably remain closed over the weekend and that members of the public who were planning to use the Hall's gym over the weekend have been advised to check the Glasgow Life website for updates. Alternative facilities are available at Glasgow Club, Maryhill and Glasgow Club, Scotstoun.
