Princess's hat sold for £81,000

Princess Beatrice's outlandish royal wedding hat has been sold for an impressive £81,100 in an internet auction.

The headgear, which was sold off for charity, attracted the mighty price tag despite being likened to a toilet seat, a cat flap and a Turkey Twizzler.

Princess Beatrice, 22, chose to sell her controversial attire to raise money for Children in Crisis and Unicef.

Her hat got mixed reactions when she donned the creation for cousin Prince William's wedding.

The Philip Treacy headpiece was described on eBay as being made of "delicate tea rose silk".

It was sold for 81,100.01 in the eBay sale which ended at 8:31pm yesterday.

The money raised will go to the two children's charities via the Little Bee Initiative, which was set up by Beatrice specifically for the auction.

A spokeswoman for Children in Crisis said: "We are absolutely delighted, it's so exciting. Children in Crisis and Unicef are so happy that Princess Beatrice chose to benefit our two charities doing this fantastic auction."

The auction was interrupted on Saturday when what the website called "a technical issue" temporarily stopped the sale.

But the site was later back up and running with a starting price of 80,000.
