Buckingham Palace waiting for Duke to be medically assessed

The Duke was taken by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from the Royal family’s Balmoral estate on Deeside.

Last night, a spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: “The Duke of Edinburgh has had a recurrence of the bladder infection that he had in the summer and has been admitted to hospital for investigation and treatment. His Royal Highness is likely to remain there for the next few days.”

According to one expert, the Duke is likely to have an underlying cause of his bladder infection and there is little he can do personally to ease the condition.

Dr Malcolm VandenBurg, a Harley Street specialist in general medicine and male health problems, said there could be numerous causes for the recurrence. However, he said three were most likely – an enlargement of the prostate gland, cancer in the prostate, or an infection in the actual prostate.

It is understood that Prince Philip, 91, became unwell while on holiday with the Queen at Balmoral.

He was taken by road, rather than by air ambulance, on the 47-mile journey from Balmoral Castle to the north east’s largest acute hospital.

There were reports on Royal Deeside of an ambulance, with its lights flashing, being spotted on the North Deeside road heading towards Aberdeen in the early afternoon, accompanied by a black Range Rover with its lights also flashing.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said that Duke of Edinburgh had been admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as a “precautionary measure” and that he would be fully assessed by medical staff.

It is the latest in a series of health concerns affecting Prince Philip in recent months.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman confirmed: “The Duke of Edinburgh was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary this afternoon as precautionary measure.”

He added: “The Duke has undertaken official engagements on the Isle of Wight only this week, but is in residence formally with the Queen at Balmoral Castle.”

Ed Bushnell, the former session clerk at Crathie Kirk on Royal Deeside, said: “We just hope and pray the Duke is fine.

“I saw him at the garden party and again at the church on Sunday and he looked very well. He seemed to be in excellent form.

“He was there with the Queen and there was quite a turnout of the members of the Royal

family.

“The Duke of Rothesay was there, together with Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex and Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugene.

“It goes without saying that everyone in Crathie will be hoping that he pulls through.”

The Duke was last seen in public on Tuesday when, as Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, he viewed racing on the Solent during Cowes Week and later had lunch on board a yacht as guest of Major General Martin White, the Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight.

He and the Queen were said to be in “excellent form” last Tuesday when the Royal couple entertained some 3,000 guests at a garden party at the Balmoral Estate which marked the end of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
