Pregnant refugee punched in stomach as gang attacks family

A HEAVILY pregnant woman was punched in the stomach when her family was attacked by a mob in Glasgow.

Hiba Bidwan, a Palestinian national, said up to 20 adults and teenagers started punching, hitting and hurling abuse at her family, who came to Glasgow five years ago.

Mrs Bidwan, 28, who is due to give birth next week, was punched in the stomach and feared she might lose her baby.

Her husband Omar, 34, suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, cuts to his face and body, and an injured eye.

Their daughters Dana, 8, and Maria, 5, were grabbed and pushed by the mob and had insults shouted in their faces.

Mrs Bidwan was rushed to the Queen Mother's Hospital, where she was told her baby was not harmed. Her husband was taken to the Western Infirmary for treatment to his injuries.

The gang attacked the family as they left their flat in Plean Street, Scotstoun, to go shopping on Sunday. The family fled war in their native land and now do not feel safe in Scotland.

A report has been sent to the procurator-fiscal and a 26-year-old woman is expected to appear in court.
