Porter admits £7,100 booze theft at hotel

A FORMER night porter has admitted stealing £7,100 worth of alcohol from one of the Capital's most prestigious hotels.

Alan Weir, 26, took 15 bottles of wine and spirits from Prestonfield House Hotel then handed in his notice.

Fiscal depute Aidan Higgins told Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday the theft came to light three days later during a check.

He told Sheriff John Horsburgh QC Weir was easily identified as the suspect from CCTV footage.

The court heard when police visited at his home they were directed to a cupboard where the alcohol was being stored.

Weir, of Gilmerton Dykes Avenue, Edinburgh, admitted stealing a quantity of alcohol on 3 January this year at the hotel.

Sentence was deferred until next month for the preparation of background reports.
